Dashboard with open data

The task was to design a dashboard in the size of an iPad with information which is relevant to us, only using data we can find open source. The goal was to find creative ways to visualize this data and use the limited space as efficient as possible.

Design challenge

My personal dashboard shows me information which is relevant to me before I leave the house in the morning.

How I chose what to show on my dashboard

The task was to build a dashboard with seven different widgets with information that is relevant to ourselves. Time and date were required. First, I wanted to have a view of the weather forecast, because I often leave the house without an umbrella or without a warm jacket. Then, I thought it would be a good idea to see how many steps I make, which are tracked on my iPhone to motivate myself to walk more. To stay informed, I placed the headlines of the day from SRF News on my dashboard. And finally, I also wanted to be able to start some of my favorite tracks on Spotify on my dashboard.

Information architecture

It was a challenge to show this much helpful information without looking too stuffed.
That's why I decided to show the information for that specific day at first sight. If you tap the widgets, you can see the information for the whole week.

About the visual design

It was a challenge to fit all the information on one screen. Therefore, I payed attention to good readability in small font sizes while choosing a font. I didn't go under the font size of 14px and chose a font color with a high enough contrast.
